Poonhill Hill – Ghandruk Trek is one of the short and beautiful treks in the Annapurna region. People from all age group can easily finish this trek within a week. This trek is suitable for those who don’t have much time and physical stamina to go into the remote and longer treks in the Himalayan but want to experience the essence of Trekking and explore the beautiful hills and country side of Nepal.
The start of the trek is from Nayapul and during the trek you will ascend up and descend down many hills and villages. You will climb along ridges through rhododendrons, oak and pine forests along with waterfalls.
The fascinating and joyous part of the trek is on the day when you wake up very early in the morning you hike an hour uphill through the stairs and into the rhododendron forest to Poon Hill at an altitude of 3210. The view tower at the top of the hills provides an unobstructed view of the sunrise over the towering Himalayas. From here you could enjoy the view of more than 20 of the highest mountains including close views of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges.
After Poohhill, the other fascinating part of the trek is you will descend steep through the thick, dense and dark forests of old rhododendron trees. During the trek you will get an opportunity to see different species of birds and varieties of plants. You will continue descend through forests and into open landscapes to reach Ghandruk: a village of Gurung people, one of the ethnic groups of Nepal, nestled in a slope with stone houses. Ghandruk village is home to many Gurkha soldiers, and Gurung people have their own culture, dialect, and way of life. Here, you will enjoy spectacular and towering views of Fishtail, Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli mountains.

Your journey begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara, Nepal’s stunning lake city. The 6–7 hour drive along the Prithvi Highway offers breathtaking views of terraced hillsides, rushing rivers, and charming rural villages. En route, you’ll pass the Trishuli and Marsyangdi rivers, with glimpses of snow-capped peaks in the distance. Upon reaching Pokhara, enjoy the serene atmosphere and panoramic vistas of the Annapurna range reflected in Phewa Lake. After your breakfast at the hotel in Pokhara, you'll drive to Nayapul, a trek starting point. And then you'll start your trek. Nayapul to Ulleri distance is 12 kilometers. The Nayapul to Ulleri hike is a popular starting point for treks in the Annapurna region of Nepal. It begins in the small town of Nayapul, which can be reached by road from Pokhara. From Nayapul, the trail takes you along the Modi Khola River to the village of Birethanti, where trekkers often check in at a checkpoint. The route then leads through lush landscapes and charming villages. As you continue hiking, you’ll pass through terraced fields and small settlements, heading towards Tikhedhunga. The hike is known for its natural beauty, including a lovely waterfall near Tikhedhunga. The final stretch involves a steep climb u around 3,000 stone steps to reach Ulleri. Overnight in Ulleri.

Begin your day with a steady uphill trek from Ulleri to Ghorepani, a scenic 4-hour walk through lush rhododendron and oak forests, charming Gurung and Magar villages, and cascading mountain streams. After reaching Ghorepani and taking some rest, set out for an evening or early morning hike to Poon Hill (3,210m), about 1 hour each way. From the top, soak in the breathtaking 360° panorama of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, bathed in golden light. Return to Ghorepani for a cozy overnight stay in the heart of the Himalayas. Overnight at the teahouse/lodge in Ghorepani.

Today’s trek takes you from the vibrant mountain village of Ghorepani (2,874 m) to the picturesque Gurung village of Ghandruk (1,940 m). The trail first ascends to Deurali Pass, offering sweeping views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, before descending through dense rhododendron and oak forests. Along the way, you’ll pass charming settlements like Tadapani, where the mountains appear almost within reach. As you descend further, the landscape opens into terraced fields and traditional stone houses. Reaching Ghandruk, you’ll be welcomed by warm Gurung hospitality, cobbled lanes, and incredible close-up views of Machapuchare (Fishtail) and Annapurna South. This cultural and scenic day is a true highlight of the trek.

Today after breakfast, you will trek downhill all the way to Birethanti. You will descend all the way down through the stone stairs, crossing many villages and terraced farmlands and forests along the way until you reach Birethanti. Birethanti is situated on the confluence of the Modi and Bhurungdi River and is a booming village lined with rows of guesthouses. From Birethanti, a half an hour trek will take you to Nayapul. Your trek on foot will end at Nayapul. You will then drive an hour to reach Pokhara. Overnight at hotel in Pokhara.

In the morning, you will be transferred to Kathmandu via a shared coach/van. It is a scenic drive, around 6-7 hours to Kathmandu. Arrival in the Kathmandu hotel. Relax on your own. Overnight at thehotel in Kathmandu.
